Lyden af Blue Note havde været indlejret i hip-hop gennem sampling & remixes siden de tidlige dage, men Madlib hævede barren, da DJ'en, produceren, rapperen & multiinstrumentalisten invaderede Blue Note-arkiverne til sit mesterværk fra 2003 Shades of Blue, et visionært album med remixes & nytænkninger af klassikere af Donald Byrd, Bobbi Humphrey, Ronnie Foster, Bobby Hutcherson, Wayne Shorter & flere. Denne Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition blev mastered af Kevin Gray og presset på 180g vinyl hos Optimal.
