Det tager en nation af millioner for at holde os tilbageblev kåret som et af de 100 største albummer nogensinde af Time magazine, "det største rapalbum nogensinde, en milepæl og en klassiker" af Q, og "det største hiphop-album nogensinde" af New Musical Express. Rolling Stone placerede albummet som nr. 48 på sin liste over "500 Greatest Albums of All Time", den højest placerede af de 27 hiphop-albums på listen. Musik fra albummet er blevet samplet af blandt andre Beastie Boys, The Game, Jay Z, Jurassic 5, Madonna og My Bloody Valentine.
