Geproduceerd door Daniel Lanois en Brian Eno, en opgenomen tussen Berlin's Hansa Studios en verschillende locaties in Dublin, werd dit met een Grammy bekroonde album in 1991 met groot kritisch succes uitgebracht. Nummer 1 in de VS, Australië, Canada, Nederland en Frankrijk en top 5 in het VK, Duitsland, Zweden, Zwitserland en Oostenrijk, bevatte het album vijf singles: `The Fly', `Mysterious Ways', `One', `Even Better Than The Real Thing' en `Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses'.
