Blue Note 的聲音從早期就透過取樣與混音融入嘻哈音樂中，但 Madlib 在 2003 年的傑作中提升了標準，當時這位 DJ、製作人、饒舌歌手兼多樂器演奏家深入 Blue Note 的音樂庫，Shades of Blue，這是一張極具遠見的專輯，收錄了 Donald Byrd、Bobbi Humphrey、Ronnie Foster、Bobby Hutcherson、Wayne Shorter 等人的經典曲目的混音與重新演繹。這張 Blue Note Classic Vinyl 版由 Kevin Gray 負責母帶處理，並在 Optimal 壓製成 180g 黑膠唱片。
